Help us answer the age-old debate: Is it ever too early to decorate for Christmas? For us, the answer is it’s never too early! Bentleyville Tour of Lights starts on Saturday, November 18th so we wanted to welcome our guests coming to see that great holiday display with Christmas decorations of our own.
We started with our main lobby where the aromas of an 11 foot Fraser Fir and hot apple cider welcome you into a cozy seating area with a glowing fireplace, holiday children’s books, Christmas ornament tic tac toe, soft holiday stockings, and as always our two life-size nutcrackers that guard the entrance.
Across from the front desk, a candy cane themed Christmas tree offers complimentary candy canes to children and adults alike. Near the hot apple cider, we have a peppermint themed countdown to Christmas: only 38 more days to go!
Entering the pool area, one cannot help but think… Santa! This tree is decked out with a skirt resembling Santa’s boots, ornaments with his face on them, and a Santa hat at the very top. Our favorite piece of this tree is the garland that looks like Santa’s clothesline. Nearby is our holiday photo booth where you can take a selfie looking like a snowman or Rudolph. For younger children, we have cards and a mailbox for sending Santa their Christmas list. He might even reply back!
For our guests visiting Bentleyville, we have our complimentary shuttle to and from Bayfront park equipped with Christmas music and extra candy canes. The shuttle will be running exclusively for Bentleyville every day of the week including Thanksgiving and Christmas. Be sure to sign up the morning of to reserve your spot.
Also, hot chocolate and coffee are available in our breakfast area 24/7—perfect enjoying an early sunrise over Lake Superior or warming up after Bentleyville.
Call our service associates or reserve online today to book your winter getaway so you can experience all we have to offer just INN time for Christmas!

The Haunted Ship again makes its ghostly appearance in Duluth on October 5. The William A. Irvin ore boat becomes the scariest place to be at this time of year – don’t go alone! We don’t want to lose any of our guests to the ore boat ghouls.

30 gallons of ice cream,
444 ice cream cups,
34 bottles of soda,
14 cans of whipped cream,
And 3 days of fun!
We celebrated the brave men and women who served our country as well as the kickoff to summer by dishing up ice creams floats over Memorial Day weekend. It was a nice time for us to step away from the office work to visit with our guests face-to-face.
During the entire weekend, a red, white, and blue themed photo booth welcomed our guests and encouraged them to snap memories of their time at the Inn. After taking pictures, guests enjoyed a beautifully decorated lobby and fireplace to warm up during the few brief rain storms.
However, rain was not a deterrent for ice cream floats. Over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we scooped hundreds of root beer, strawberry, and orange floats. Providing families with quality time together is what our job is all about, and it was great to see little ones all the way up to grandparents spoon and slurp a delicious float.
After the floats and between the bouts of rain, many guests enjoyed our newly refinished bean bag toss games in our backyard. We’re so fortunate to have a massive expanse of lawn to enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Superior. If not playing bean bag toss, other guests checked out our complimentary bikes that are now available for the entire summer.
Thank you to all of our guests who stayed with us. We are looking forward to the great summer months ahead!
This past weekend we treated our guests to some of our Easter favorites! Saturday began with pink lemonade and a satisfyingly sweet spring popcorn mix. We dished out hundreds of servings and our guests kept asking for more! You can find the popcorn recipe below. Feel free to make this for any holiday by changing the type of M&M’s or adding your own creative ideas.
Sweet Spring Popcorn Mix
For 4-10 people
Combine ingredients and mix gently! We served our mix in adorable chevron printed popcorn cups.
The remainder of the weekend included a coloring contest with jumbo egg prizes and our annual Easter Egg Hunt. We hid four baskets throughout the Inn. Each child who turned in an egg from each basket won a funny bunny surprise!
We had so much fun with our Easter extras, and are already thinking about what we can add to next year’s Easter plans. We wish you were here!

The thought of being surrounded by 300 teenagers seems daunting, but for us it was another opportunity to welcome some of our favorite guests. During the first weekend in March, nine robotics teams participating in this year’s annual competition at the DECC made the Inn their home base. Some teams were new to us and some were returning, but they all showed a level of respect that went beyond their years.
This year, we wanted to give these great teams an even bigger and better welcome to Duluth by providing a thank you table in our lobby. The students enjoyed complimentary snacks like granola bars and chocolate chip cookies as well as trinkets to get into the spirit of robotics like temporary tattoos and mini foam fingers.
Congratulations to our extra special team, New Apple Corps, who won the 2017 Lake Superior Regional, the Engineering Inspiration Award, and the Double DECCer Championship. We look forward to welcoming Robotics 2018!
With Robotics behind us, we are currently scheming and dreaming special treats for our guests during Easter weekend in April. Make your reservations now for a weekend that will truly be “egg”ceptional!
We wish you were here!
Hi there, we are Carol and Kelsey. If you have stayed at The Inn on Lake Superior in the past year, or if you follow The Inn on Facebook, you have probably noticed a few changes. In March of 2016, we were lucky enough to become the Director and Assistant Director of Guest Services. Since then, we have combined our love for our guests, for Lake Superior, and for crafting concoctions… and the result was pure magic.
We have enjoyed planning extras for holidays like Memorial Day and Christmas and for local special events like Grandma’s Marathon and Tall Ships Festival. As it turns out, estimating treats and goodies for hundreds of guests is no easy task. In the past year, we have purchased 30 pounds of melted chocolate, 300 rubber ducks, 18 gallons of vanilla ice cream, 4 fake skeletal hands, 30 jack o’ lanterns and 5,000 Christmas ornaments. And that is just the beginning.
We are looking forward to making the year ahead even better and we hope to share an inside look into the funny, challenging, surprising, and crazy things that make The Inn on Lake Superior the best place to stay in Duluth. Our goal is to make your stay a memorable one. We wish you were here!
